Frequently Asked Questions

What does Audio Visual (AV) refer to?

At the foundation level, it's exactly what the name says:

  • Audio: technology that enables sound amplification, transmission and/or recording.

  • Visual: technology that enables the audience to see information.

In many settings, the term is a catch-all for any meeting or event technology.

What equipment is considered part of an AV solution?

  • Audio: microphones (wired or wireless), mixers, amplifiers, loudspeakers and any accessories required to capture audio signals from their sources.

  • Visual: generally, this will include anything that can display video or graphics. Monitors, projectors, LED walls will enlarge media for the audience. The other side of visual is the capture of video for enlargement (e.g., IMAG), recording or transmission (e.g. streaming). Capture devices include cameras which will be connected to switchers or processors to control what is delivered to the screens.

There are many other things that get lumped into AV like screens, drape, lighting, and cables/connectors.

Is Professional AV equipment different?

There are different levels of AV Equipment ranging from Professional to Consumer with levels in between. Some important differences include:

  • Technical Features: things like audio feedback control, color matching, and signal routing are used by professionals to design and operate the overall system.

  • Reliability: professional equipment is inherently more robust, ensuring fewer failures.
  • Flexibility: audio systems are more tunable to suit the program and venue; video systems are scalable to service whatever size audience you may have.

Do I really need an AV Technician to operate my event?

HB Live manages the entire lifecycle of your AV Production. Our pre-event consultation is translated to a technical and operating plan designed for success.  Some events can be designed as plug-and-play where our team sets up the equipment and the presenters can easily use it without on-site support. Most events want to have skilled technicians to operate and continuously tune the system to ensure quality audio and seamless video.

Why is the equipment so darn expensive?

AV systems are much more than their components. HB Live invests in protective shipping cases that can exceed the cost of the item they contain. We purchase and maintain high-quality cables, adapters, and accessories needed to complete the AV System. Some of these items are incorporated into the systems and are included in the system price.

All equipment must be maintained and checked before every project. HB Live has a full-time team dedicated to ensuring all equipment is in perfect working condition before each project. Last, there are business costs associated with owning great equipment. This includes insurance, property taxes and training.
